Episode: #54 Michael 'Silent Mike' on how to live life on your own terms

Who: Today's guest is internet superstar Michael 'Silent Mikke' Farr, who describes himself as a Male internet Entertainer Coach, lifter, and content creator.

He recently left a massive brand and went his own way, forging his own career, businesses and creating the life he wanted to live. I was keen to get Mike onto the podcast as not only was I a massive fan but I also knew he would have some awesome gems on how you can do this too, and go for your dreams. He has gone from strength to strength as he is building up his platform and his message and I know he is the perfect person to discuss this. In this interview, we discuss taking the first step away, overcoming fear, building your own name up, diversifying to find out what suits you best and so much more. This is different from most interviews with Mike, we move away from lifting and cover an area few discuss but would change so many men's lives, and that is building a life on your own terms.

What we cover

  • Who he is
  • About his upbringing and his love for basketball
  • How he transitioned into powerlifting and how he made a brand for himself from weights
  • His philosophy on content creation and what makes successful content
  • Who he looks to as a role model
  • What does he consider makes a good man
  • What inspires him to get out of bed every morning
  • Why he felt the time was right to make the move and build his own brand
  • How has he found the transition from being part of a successful team to going on his own
  • How to stay relevant in a crowded niche and with so much competition
  • What his goals are for the future
  • Who his dream interview guests would be?
  • Ways to connect with media influencers and connect builders
  • His podcast and its guests
  • Building strong friendships and networking tips
  • How to work a business with friends
  • What advice for those who want to go and out and do their own ventures
  • What does he want everyone listening to the interview to take away as the go home message?
  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • It is very obvious during the interview at how focused Mike is ... he picks his goals and commits to them, letting little get in his way. What could you achieve if you stopped wasting time and committed to chasing your dreams?
  • Mike's father played a very important role in his life, he demonstrated how to be a good man and give back to others - what are you doing to help others?
  • Mike didn't let lack of resources like a coach or money hold him back. He sourced and scrapped for the things he needed to improve. There is free content everywhere, library books you can rent and other deals you can make to help someone for some assistance etc. There is no excuse for you not working to get the things you need to get to get better. It might not be easy but it is life's way of making sure you deserve the return. If it was easy, it wouldn't be fun!
  • Every man should have at least one goal in their life to better the lives of others
  • You can make any life you want, you can build the life you want
  • There is always fear. It will never go away. You just need to suck it up, identify a fallback position and the worst case scenario and go for it. Life is too short to not go for your dreams.
  • Always be you but don't be afraid to change the environment and type of message or product you are putting out to evolve and move with the times and be open to trying new things
  • You find out who you are by putting in the work
  • You need to be open, vulnerable and genuine to build good, strong friendships. Genuine people attract other genuine places. Be open, supportive and genuine with people you click with and put in the effort to build the relationship with them and it will help build lifelong relationships.
  • There's dumb and smart risk - weigh up what you are going to do and plan it, and go for it. Always be open to growth and change. There is always a way to get back to where you are or make money again.

Episode: #53 Nick 'Chewy' Albin on why you need to try BJJ right now

Who: Today's guest is BJJ coaching guru Nick 'Chewy' Albin. Nick is a BJJ which stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) competitor, coach and owner of Chewjitsu which is a Youtube training channel, and its associated BJJ training facility in Louisville, Kentucky. This guy has been an amazing help to me in my own BJJ journey and he is a must follow for beginners and experts alike, an awesome coach and a great guy! We discuss a lot of different concepts in this one and it really outlines the joys of BJJ and why I think every person needs to try it. In this interview, we discuss his story, BJJ, how life-changing training can be, role models, training methods, his outlook on life and so much more. Nick is throwing gem after gem in this one! I practically gave up trying to record them all down as there was so many ... so listen and enjoy!

**Please note that this was recorded back in July 2018 and due to some other time-sensitive recordings, the release for this interview was moved back. Some aspects have changed, I am now a 4 tab white belt and feel much more centred, controlled, considerably more developed and skilled practitioner and its thanks to guys like Nick for this evolution of me as a BJJ competitor and person. And apologies, back then I sat too far away from my mic so the sound is a bit crap in places but I didn't want to tinker too much with the sound and lose the authenticness of the interview**

  • How do you leave your ego at the door and enter training with an empty learning cup?
  • How BJJ will change you as a person and become a good training partner
  • How should we look at being beaten? How should we look at loss and overcome the negative association we tend to add to it and actually learn from it?
  • How Nick coaches and his truly superb way of viewing learning BJJ and using it as well
  • How progression is judged and what you need to do to show to be ready for another tab or belt
  • The amazing benefits of an open mat session and a training debrief
  • The importance and benefits of going for a short walk after a meal.
  • The evolution of techniques and moves in Jiu-Jitsu
  • How to pick the right gym for you to train BJJ at
  • Where his creativity and passion for training BJJ comes from

  • Do mental workouts like visualisation work?
  • How Nick chooses his content and connects with his audience
  • What should you expect from your first class and starting BJJ
  • The evolution of his business
  • How should someone starting outlook to progress within their first six months of BJJ training
  • How does he deal with the fast break questions
  • What he wants you to take from the interview
  • How you can keep in touch with him and his projects
  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • BJJ is a human chess match, you can never fully learn BJJ but you can make it your own, evolve positions submissions and movement chains to make your own version of BJJ
  • To be a great student, you need to find your own intrinsic reason about why you want to learn, it needs to be something you want to do, to learn as it is a long challenging road but it will be a life-changing road
  • BJJ techniques are changing and evolving all the time, there are no real wrong positions, more your reaction from being in it dictates how successful you can
  • If you can control three out of four points to pass a guard - hips, knees and legs, it will create a really nasty and skilled guard pass
  • Learn to relax and that mindset will open up your creative mind and it will allow creating, to tinker and modify to make BJJ in your own style
  • Martial arts allows you to take back your power, your true identity after being bullied, a bad family environment etc, martial arts allows you to become centred and controlled again
  • Who we are is very malleable, we can change, we can develop, we can become better, no matter our current starting point
  • The story you tell yourself will control how successful you will be and how quickly you can 'learn' BJJ - what is the story you tell about yourself? Is it a positive or negative?
  • Everyone is going to be different in terms of skill progression, your journey is yours alone, don't judge yourself against another, don't compare yourself against others, follow your own path and help others but each of us goes on our own journey
  • You need to step away from the mats to recover, learn and evolve as well as time training - you need a healthy mixture of training, recover and other hobbies
  • Good or bad, the experiences you have gone through have made you the person you are today and you can learn from them and become a better person from it
  • Instead of trying to find solutions to the reasons you don't or can't do something, find the one reason - all it takes is one - to actually want to do it and focus on that

  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • Sometimes it is best to become a manager in a start-up before trying your own start-up, you learn the basics and the key skills that you will need to make your version a success
  • There are so many paths to entrepreneurship - you don't need to do the 'modern' or 'typical' route that you hear big-name founders following. Not everyone can or should be another Facebook but there is a potential audience open to everyone no matter the type of idea.
  • We always have an opportunity, no matter your starting point, you choose how you react, how you take. Don't let the man in the mirror talk you out of trying, you have no idea where you might go.
  • Creativity in games, sports etc can make you more creative across the board.
  • Education can be important but the experience is vital. To be a good founder, you need to be experienced in every aspect or find someone else who can be. Everyone has a uniques path and skill set that can be utilised to make a fantastic team.
  • You need to really believe in what you are doing to succeed, you need to believe in your mission. However, it is probably a bad approach to try and do it all on your own. You need a strong support team and network to do this, rather than being on your own. You need to support each other as you will fail but a strong support team will help you get back on track and help you out of the problems and out of the development plateaus.
  • Working on your business is important ... but you need to step away from it at times, to relax and recover and build a strong work/life balance. Too much time spent will end up exhausting you and that causes burnout and most will struggle and fail. You need to work but play too. You need to plan breaks and work smart not hard.
  • Everyone is trying to figure this journey and business journey out. No one has it down perfect.

What we cover

  • Who he is and why you should check him out
  • Where the idea and structure for the channel came from - how we have video games to be thankful for his channel
  • How he got into martial arts and how has the UFC and rise of martial arts affected the types of customers he attracts to his club
  • How would he define grappling to those who are new to the sport and how is grappling different to the UFC and street fights
  • Should all men do a physical sport like grappling?
  • How do men go wrong when they train grappling and combat sports
  • How can you learn grappling the quickest and training hacks
  • What should a good instructor teach you in terms of quality of teaching and method of teaching
  • What should a person starting out focus on? Basics or advanced?
  • Why does he think his coaching style is so successful compared to other coaches?
  • What does he look for in a student to know they are ready to be promoted with a new tab/belt?
  • What personality and mentality do his ideal students have?
  • How did he find the transition from competitor to coach? What about the students who try to be 'assistant coaches' but aren't official?
  • How does he see his channel evolving in the future?
  • The characteristics that good grapplers have
  • What does he want people to take away from the interview?
  • What does he consider an unusual fact about himself?
  • How can you keep in touch with him?
  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • Consistency is key in the formation of successful habits
  • Grappling is fighting without striking someone - movies and TV shows have greatly misconstrued how a real fight works
  • Lack of discipline can lead to fights - if every man trained, we wouldn't have as many fights as we currently do
  • Learning to relax is the key to success when learning to grapple
  • The majority of men are not knowledgeable about BJJ and self-defense, those who are will have the advantage. Sadly, not all coaches have the same level of leadership and training, you need to seek out those who can truly teach the essence of grappling, BJJ etc.
  • The basics are great in learning a martial art but no advancement of techniques will prevent you evolving and progressing. Both basic and advanced are key to becoming great.
  • Performance and being an individual are more important than knowledge in a student - it is about making grappling and BJJ a version of your style
  • Less talking, more learning is the best approach as a new student
  • Confidence in your ability is almost and some say more important than technique
  • Age and history does not make something right, newer developments can be better than the 'proper way' of doing a technique

Episode: #49 RSD Maxx answers your questions

Who: Today's guest is extraordinary dating coach RSD Maxx. Max is a dating coach with RSD Nation and has just launched the most successful dating product ever, called 'The Natural', which has broken all records. He teaches guys how to become a natural with women by developing and unleashing their true potential. He is described by RSD Nation as having ‘an amazing repertoire of stories … and has a gift for teaching self-development and lifestyle enhancement as well. His teachings focus on state of the art strategies and knowledge on how to pick up women and become the man you have always wanted to be.’

This interview is slightly different as it is not really an interview. I collated together a bunch of questions I received from readers and we covered these during our chat with Maxx offering hints and tips to fix the issues, in a 'Ask the Expert' feature. If you enjoyed this and would like to see more of these types of chat, let me know by using the contact form on the site or sending me a message on social media. I think Maxx is fantastic here giving some life-changing advice for men listening.

Some things to reflect on

To book a free consultation call with RSD Maxx, please click here.

There is nothing really stopping you from becoming better with women … just the stories that you tell yourself about why you can’t do it, the self-imposed barriers you put in front of yourself. Anyone, at any stage, can become better and become a natural by polishing their true self and building attraction by being themselves, you just need to learn how to do so. Start small if needed but start now, take action rather than take regrets.

Episode: #48 The Mind Pump guys on how to build great partnerships that can change the world

Who: Today's guests are the Mind Pump Media team. This interview is fun, informative and full of double entendres! The guys are the cutting edge of the fitness industry and really helping people transform themselves by cutting through the BS and fakeness of the fitness industry and actually providing helpful advice that can work for you to help you achieve your goals.

As the guys describe themselves: "MindPump is an online radio show/podcast that has been described as Howard Stern meets fitness. It is sometimes raw, sometimes shocking and is always entertaining and informative. Your hosts, Sal Di Stefano, Adam Schafer and Justin Andrews have over 40 years of combined fitness experience as personal trainers, club managers, IFBB fitness competitors and fitness thought leaders.

The fitness world is filled with charlatans and snake oil salesmen pushing the latest and greatest (and sometimes downright dangerous) workout programs, supplements and faux science on the unsuspecting masses. Sal, Adam and Justin use MindPump as a platform to shed the light of TRUTH on health, fitness and a host of other topics."

In this interview, we discuss what makes Mind Pump so unique and successful and focus on how to build great partnerships and friendships that can help you change the world.

And yes, before anyone asks, the intro was recorded when I only had my temp use mic and the quality is shocking!

Some things to reflect on

  • Mind Pump is working to cut out the myths and bullshit that exist in the fitness industry today to give useful, actionable and enjoyable fitness help. Mind Pump doesn't preach, they share the modalities, the pros, and negatives of everything and what works for you and provide 'radical honesty' to disrupt the bs the industry has been building.
  • To become fit - "A lot of things work but nothing works for everybody and the things that do work, won't work for you all the time", how is your approach working truthfully? Do you need to adapt it or change your approach to suit?
  • Helping clients is about problem-solving through the bs and mass of misinformation and helping them find the methods that work for them. There are no cookie cutter approaches to success that work for everyone.
  • When working with a client, it is more about how you communicate things to the client then what you are communicating to them
  • Undissolved egos can cause a massive problem when trying to form and develop a team - can you let others lead? Do you need to be the 'main guy' in the team? Are you really trying to benefit the team or do you have a 'scarcity mindset' and just looking out for yourself?
  • "Partnerships are like marriage"
  • Own what you are not good at, accept it and utilise what you can provide and assist the team with. The best teams work because each person provides assistance to the team with something that is otherwise lacking. Not everyone can be the best at everything. Find out what you are good at and provide that to the team and the partnerships.
  • "Your true net worth is your network" is a statement that I really agree with. As they say, you are the average of the five people you hang around with most. Is your network something you are proud of? If not, what are you going to do about it?
  • Don't be afraid to try or go somewhere new or a topic you haven't covered or considered. Challenge yourself. Try it and see how things go, try and evolve.
  • Some great viewpoints for what will help you become the best version of yourself the fastest: "Be comfortable with being uncomfortable", "Make friends with what you don't know", "Be Ok with being wrong".
  • "Stop focusing on the things you are not good at, focus on what you are good at and be fucking great". You can't be great at everything, stop beating yourself up about things you aren't good at and instead use this philosophy to become great by "know your strengths, know what you are good at and be great at it".
  • "Seek out the opposite viewpoint" to succeed and listen to them with an open mind and either come out with a stronger opinion or change your mind. Either way you will win as you will either strengthen your understanding or be wrong and learn from it.
  • The only person you should compare yourself to is how you were yesterday. Always be looking to better youself today compared to yesterday.

  • How should accessories be used to build our own individual style?
  • How does he deal with the fast break questions
  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • Fashion can help build our identity - what is your fashion and style saying about you, your image, and identity?
  • Your style is not just what you wear, it how you hold yourself, how you walk, how you act
  • Masculine men take risks and put themselves out there to succeed in their goals
  • Working with other men in a mastermind group can help you delve deep into the masculinity of the members and remove the masks they have been hiding behind to become their true selves
  • It is never too late, regardless of your current situation, romantic overview, history, age, race etc to start improving your style and becoming the man you want to be
  • "We live in a culture that operates on snap judgments" - people make assumptions on how you look and attribute your abilities and their beliefs of you on how you look. Your style can open doors for you that were maybe not going to be open currently
  • Consider your fit, complexion, length, and shape when picking clothing that suits you
  • Clothes should be "comfortably snug", it fits your body but doesn't restrict movement
  • You should plan out outfits and batch process the prep work on your outfits, ideally a day before
  • Be open and honest with what you wear, make mistakes, ask for feedback and learn from what works, you don't need to be perfect straight away, but you do need to start to get where you want to go!
  • Pick your friends well and leave those who want to destroy you behind - you are the average of the five people you hang around with

Onnit's products work!

Some things to reflect on

  • Onnit puts forwards the tools to support Total Human Optimization for you for the long-term success
  • "The basic unit of life is the day", get one right and you can build an incredible life. "Each day is judged on it's own accord".
  • "Make it about a lifestyle rather than a crash diet" - make it a workable habit for success
  • Aubrey saw massive growth and transformation when he started to live his purpose rather than just live - what is your purpose and how can you start living towards it?
  • "We are creatures of momentum", once we start moving, it is hard to stop!
  • "Masculinity isn't tied to a gender". We all have both energies inside ourselves and how we tackle the world. A man is "a force for order" a female is a "force of surrender ... and creator".
  • A tribe is a reason to fight above ourself, we are designed to be part of a tribe and fight for one another
  • "How do you know yourself unless you test yourself?". You need pressure to learn about yourself. Lack of knowing creates insecurity that others will notice.
  • You can always own your reaction and actions to what happens. You can own every aspect of your day and begin again when things go wrong.
  • Stop wasting time, learn something, expand your mind and succeed. There is no excuse to waste time!
  • We all have demons and dark impulses etc - it's part of being human. Stop hating yourself. Be open and honest, really reflect on yourself to start going places.
  • The motivation to change needs to come from a place of love rather than lust, fear or desire. Learn to read where it comes from and you'll know if it's your ego or your real desire.
  • You will need to start the process of being open and vulnerable first, but it will be worth it.
  • You are only responsible for your own life, effort and best, it's all we are only really responsible for.
  • Kids are much better mimickers than learners in the traditional sense.
  • "It is possible to be truly happy and in your control". You have way more than you will ever know ... you will be shocked at how much potential you will have to enjoy this life.

  • How you can keep in touch with Mark and his projects and how you can train at the Super Training gym
  • And so much more

 Some things to reflect on

  • His mission is to make the world a better place to lift and to feel the same way about fitness as him - helping the user find their own version of getting stronger
  • "Dream harder than you work"
  • Don't give up on yourself, self-doubt is OK, giving up is not!
  • You have to be forward thinking and thinking big, you need to 'put the cart before the horse'. You need to be creative and planning ahead, you may need to drag the cart yourself for the first while trying to build the idea but eventually, it will take off and others will help pull the cart too
  • An awakening can be done via personal development, it doesn't need to be a massive event, it can be brought about by education
  • What you do now, can help mold and better your life in the future, start now to change your life for the better, regardless of the starting point and how small it is
  • "We become our very own thoughts" - what we think about we become, ensure your thoughts aim to better you, rather than destroy yourself
  • "We all have self-talk... following through on our self-talk is important". It's easy to think it but harder to do it. Do it and you'll be amazed where it will take you.
  • Some of life's worst moments can be a learning experience, and allow you to understand and help others - whatever you are doing, just be mindful of what is happening, be wise and honest with yourself and the situation
  • You are the average of the five people you mainly hang around with, what they do, you will tend to act similar, pick wisely! Mark has built a strong inner circle of friends that help make him a better man
  • You want to progressively overload your life, to take on more work, to push yourself more and evolve and improve yourself. Have some time when you shut off the phone and the outside world and work on yourself.
  • Physical activity can allow you to enter a heightened state of understanding and mental capacity
  • "Inspire ... don't destruct". "Be mindful ... be paying attention". "Help other people".
  • Always consider "how is this helping me and how is this hurting me" when you are doing anything to see if the action is worth it or will it hurt you. Then choose wisely! This may transform your life!

The Basics

Episode: #44 Amanda Bobby Cooper on MMA, training and beating doubt

Who: Amanda Bobby Cooper is an American professional mixed martial artist who competes in the Strawweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). She started boxing at the age of 12 and in 2011 at the age of 19 she stepped into the octagon for the first time. In 2 years she became #1 ranked 125lb amateur fighter in Michigan and #3 ranked in the country with a amateur record of 8-3. Utilising a boxing approach, the 26 year old entered the UFC via the famed MMA reality show 'The Ultimate Fighter' and continues to help womens MMA evolve by demonstrating great technique and showcasing her talent. The UFC summarise her fighting style as powerful, saying she is unpredictable and switches stance, utilising a good guard and good submissions.

In this interview, we quickly discuss her story, MMA, training etc. We didn't have much time, so we just covered some basics, but Amanda gives some great answers, you can't help but like her and she is going to be a superstar soon. I hope to have her on the show for a full interview when our schedules will allow it.

The Basics

Episode: #43 Alice Little on intimacy, connection and why our perceptions of sex work are very wrong

Who: Alice Little is the number one booking legal sex worker in the United States and works as a courtesan at the Moonlite Bunny Ranch. At only 4ft 8in, she is by far the tiniest lady at the legal brothels in Nevada. A New York native, she has worked as an EMT and horse jockey, loves electronic and tabletop entertainment, and adores intellectual stimulation. A frequent visitor to Virginia City and fascinated by its history, she loves exploring Nevada and all it has to offer. Alice has presented at over 50 Kink and BDSM events nationwide and frequently helps couples with their problems in and out of the bedroom. She has recently started writing relationship advice articles for She Knows Media and was also recently featured on the Tim Ferriss Show.

In this interview we discuss the benefits of sex work, intimacy, building connection with others and why your perceptions of sex work are very likely to be wrong. This topic may not be for everyone but Alice is very humble, honest, open and truthfull about the pros and cons for sex workers and is trying to make the industry better for those who use it and work in it. This interview may offend some but this podcast is here to delve into all areas and find out more and what makes people so successful and so appealing to others. Sex work is one of the oldest industries around and we would be doing a disservice to men by ignoring where we go wrong and by ignoring the industry and its positive benefits that can be provided to those who use it. I have never used a sex worker but this did not mean I was not interested in finding out more and learning about the other side of life as the saying goes. I hope that if anything, like Alice says you learn that sex workers are humans too and deserve the same level of respect and interest as anyone else and hpefully this interview changes your perceptions on sex work too or helps you at least consider you current views on the industry and those who work in it.

What we cover

  • Her upbringing and how it shaped her outlook on life
  • Is there a common problem that is identifiable in her customers and why they come to see her?
  • What is her definition of masculinity and where do men go wrong?
  • How someone interested should try sex work for the first time
  • Why is the 'Girlfriend Experience' so popular among her clients?
  • What does she enjoy the most about her job? How has it changed her and her outlook on life in general?
  • Has she encountered negative reactions to her chosen profession?
  • Has the acceptance of sex in today's society, changed the type of people she encounters as a client
  • Any favourite client transformations of hers
  • Why she has been more successful than other professionals in the sex industry
  • How does the age of the client affect how they interact and the type of services they look for
  • How does she deal with the feelings that sex and connection may raise with her customers
  • What does she consider will be the evolution of sex work - will it ever be legalised nationally or internationally and accepted throughout?
  • How does she deal with the fast-break questions?
  • What she hopes people take from the interview?
  • How you can keep in touch with her
  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • Tamorrow Pierce First female knight
  • Her clients have a self-awareness of what they want in life - is there something that you would like to try but are not sure how to communicate this to your partner?
  • Alice finds men "struggle with connection and communication"
  • The heart of the problem is the lack of sex education and communication - if you can't verbalise it, should you really be doing it?
  • We need to be vulnerable and open with our partners to find true intimacy - the stereotype of being the strong silent man is really holding us back from finding the connections with our partners on the level that we truly desire
  • Our society has become very touch-starved and physical intimacy is on the decline - leave the phone alone and build connection with the person opposite you
  • You need to stop looking to the future as it is not a guarentee, the only thing we have that is promised is the here and now
  • Find out more about 'Hookers for Health Care' here
  • Alice does not compare herself to others, she just works on becoming the best version of herself - why are you competing with others? Be open, vulnerable and become the man you want to become by competing only with the person you were yesterday and improving on that
  • Porn isn't bad but it can be in how you use it and allow yourself to be desensitised to sexual needs and wants - is your use of porn healthy?
  • "The speed at how we have sex has got to slow down" and "we need to spend more time on things like foreplay" as we are "missing the beauty of sex" because we are rushing things
  • Relationships require work and we shouldn't shy away from doing the work
  • As Alice says "there is an aspect of every single human being .. to fall in love with", so stop worrying about who you are and allow yourself to be open, honest and intimate with your partner, friends etc and build true and honest connections with others
  • Sex workers are people too, so learn to identify with the person and connect with them rather then with your own belief about their profession

  • How can we learn to leave the ego at the gym and properly lift in the gym
  • How does he lift such heavy weights? What goes through his mind during his heavy lifts?
  • Where does his motivation come from? What keeps him pushing hard in the gym
  • Why does he tend to move towards single person sports compared to team sports
  • How has he turned his lifting career into a business and a brand
  • Does he have a typical day?

  • What does he want guys listening to take from this interview?
  • What is an unusual fact about him
  • How you can keep in touch with him
  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • Chad became strong when he was younger by trying, he didn't know why things worked when he was younger but to the tried. Start now and begin, learn as you go You don't need to know everything before you start to succeed.
  • Quality of relationships and integrity and thoughtfulness and all that is more important than how much you can lift
  • Season of life by Jeffery Marx
  • Be open, vulnerable and able to share to build a strong friendship with other males
  • Stop trying to find the easy or quick solution for strength - learn to master the concept to truly learn and reach your goal - it takes months and years to chase mastery, not 30 days like the magazine covers say
  • "Go into each session, with one thing to focus on" and record details of the training session
  • If you cannot explain it, do you understand it? Learn the technique, do not rely on your strength only
  • Focus on the process of the technique - its impossible to go from step a to step z with none of the steps in between
  • Use movement progression - pick specific goals and build towards these, do the exercise well and progress to the more advanced versions of the movement
  • It's easy to let the day slip by if you don't have a plan
  • John Donaghue podcast with Joe Rogan
  • Money can make life more comfortable but family are the most important thing
  • Goals are achievable - have the courage to go for your goal like Chad did, attack them with your full heart so you do not live an unfulfilled life
  • Juggernaut Performance Summit

The Basics

Episode: #41 Rachel Hoffman on how to Unf*ck your Habitat

Who: Today’s guest is Rachel Hoffman, founder of 'Unf*ck your Habitat' and author of the awesome book of the same name.

I was trying to think how best to sum up Rachel's great work when I came across her about page and I think it sums it up perfectly:

"Unf*ck Your Habitat: You’re Better than Your Mess is the housekeeping and organizational system developed for those of us who’d describe our current living situation as a “f*cking mess” that we’re desperate to fix ... it is for anyone who has been left behind by traditional aspirational systems: The ones that ignore single people with full-time jobs; people without kids but living with roommates; and people with mental illnesses or physical limitations, among many others. Most organizational books are aimed at traditional homemakers, DIYers, and people who seem to have unimaginable amounts of free time. They assume we all iron our sheets, have linen napkins to match our table runners, and can keep plants alive for longer than a week. Basically, they ignore most of us living here in the real world.

Interspersed with lists and challenges, this practical, no-nonsense advice relies on a 20/10 system (20 minutes of cleaning followed by a 10-minute break; no marathon cleaning allowed) to help you develop lifelong habits. It motivates you to embrace a new lifestyle in manageable sections so you can actually start applying the tactics as you progress. This philosophy is decidedly more realistic than aspirational, but the goal is the same: not everyone will have a showcase of a home, but whatever your habitat, you deserve one that brings you happiness, not stress."

What we cover

  • Who she is and why she is well known
  • What was the turning point that got her into this area
  • Where do most men go wrong with their habitats and cleaning
  • Has the gender viewpoints on cleaning and house-work changed over the years?
  • Has social media and reality TV shows changed the way we live and view our habitats?
  • The philosophy of unfucking your habitat - how should we start sorting out our habitats?
  • The 20/10 principle and how it can change your life
  • Little changes you can make right now to get the biggest return
  • What is 'Sink Zero' and why it is so awesome
  • How cleaning can be changed for those with limitations on what they can do
  • What is an 'invisible corner' and why should you worry about them
  • How should teach kids to be more involved with the cleaning and organising our habitats
  • What should be in our cleaning toolkit?
  • How do we keep on top of cleaning during stress times and holidays?
  • Where did the inspiration for the book come from and why has it been so successful?
  • How some people struggle to get past the title of the site and the motivation for it
  • How do we know if we are getting better at cleaning and organising our habitats?
  • Why you need a copy of this book right now
  • How can you keep in touch with her
  • And so much more

 Some things to reflect on

  • She is not a naturally clean and organised person but taught herself how not to be a slob anymore and you can too
  • Most systems assume you have unlimited time, money or knowledge to do these things but weren't designed for real life, she gives you the starting point and where to go from there
  • "You created the mess, so you should be responsible for cleaning it" - cleaning is not a gender-specific role
  • Social media are "carefully constructed views" of someone's house and you think it is real life but no one lives like that in real life
  • Remember "In reality, people have messy homes and messy lives" - social media does not give a true reflection of real life
  • "Progress is good ... it doesn't need to be perfect right away"
  • People should "build small habits over time"
  • The reality of cleaning is that it is a cycle, it never ends, little and often works best
  • "Take wherever you are and start there, you don't need to change your life ... to get a clean home"
  • Kids will treat organising and cleaning the same way you do, your behaviours are the model that your children will adopt
  • Let go your "expectation of perfection"
  • "You don't need a lot of stuff to do this", don't accumulate more things trying to clean
  • "Start with what smells bad"
  • People underestimate the link between your habitat and your mood - if you feel good about where you live, you will feel good

Some things to reflect on

  • "A guy should be free to grow or shave off his facial hair" as he pleases - Your look and appearance should be about who you want to represent to the world, not for anyone else
  • "Being aware of yourself and being the person you want to be is masculinity"
  • "If things are running smoothly then you probably aren't pushing the comfort level of your business enough"
  • "It's a passion project for me ... something I love" - it's a cliche but if you work on something you love, it will never feel like work and it'll keep your interest
  • Business is not just about fixing the problem of the day, it is also about preparing for potential future problems and figuring out how to resolve them
  • "The majority of the population is OK with facial hair"
  • "You're the person who spends 100% of their time with you" - live your life for you, not for others, be who you want to be!
  • Your facial hair is linked in with your DNA so "the sooner you learn to love the person who looks back at you from the mirror, the better experience you are going to have"
  • "Do what you say you are going to do" ... provide a top service and story, people will come back
  • "There is no one path", you need to follow the path that closely aligns with who you are
  • "Be the person that you want the world to be"

Episode: #39 Jack Donovan on redefining the way we see masculinity today

Who: From Jack's about page: "Jack Donovan is the author of the The Way of Men — a straightforward, politically incorrect theory of masculinity that became an underground hit around the world ... Donovan has been blogging, writing and speaking about masculinity and tribalism since for over a decade ... He lives in the Pacific Northwest, where he leads a chapter of the infamous Wolves of Vinland  — an esoteric tribe of Germanic pagans." I don't know if I need to say anything more as an intro!

In this interview we discuss masculinity, why it is not a dirty word and why we should undertake our own journey to become better men and more masculine men.

Affiliate highlight: Before we get into that, a quick word about our affiliates. I’ve managed to build up some great relationships with some awesome companies. This allows me to obtain special discount codes, deals, and listener exclusive. Please go to www.nextlevelguy.com/affiliates for further info.

I am particularly loving the Gainz Box and it's awesome fitness goodies straight to your door, another is OMG Yes, which is a video series on how to truly pleasure a woman and my Barbell Apparel jeans that feel so comfy but show off your muscle gains in all the right places. For these and so much more, check out www.nextlevelguy.com/affiliates.

What we cover

  • Who he is and why he is well known
  • What happended during his childhood that made him look in masculinity
  • How is masculinity being portrayed in today's society
  • What is masculinity and who are the great role models of masculine energy?
  • Where he thinks modern day men are going wrong in society and the factors that affect thier masculinity
  • How can we recreate the old rituals that boys undertook to become men like the old civilisations do but do it in our easy lives
  • Why do you need a tribe to truly become masculine and a man and how it needs to be set up/contain to succeed.
  • Can we use sports etc to replace these missing rituals and tribes in our lives?
  • Are the characteristics of what makes a good man the same across the world?
  • What he thinks about the style of masculinity that is shipped by today's media?
  • Can you grade masculinity? Are we masculine or not or shades of masculine more or less than the next man?
  • What challenges could you set yourself to become a more masculine man and develop yourself?
  • Why is there not a push for men to become more masculine in today's society? Why do some men hate on those who try to improve in their lives?
  • How should today's men adapt to the differing roles of women and equality in the modern world
  • Can you ever become too mascline? At what point does becoming more masculine cause problems?
  • How does the role of the father play in how masculine a man is and how good a man he will be? How should we raise the next generation of men to help raise good men?
  • How does he deal with those who dislike the masculinity message he is bringing out?
  • How should those listening overcome jealousy, hate etc when they try to become a more masculine man and a better man?
  • How can you tell if you are becoming a better man? What is the yard stick or criteria we can use to show improvements?
  • The message those listening should take from this interview?
  • Are there any unusual things about Jack that will blow your mind?
  • How you can keep in touch with him?
  • And so much more

 Some things to reflect on

  •  There are a lot of positives about striving to be a better man
  • Masculinity is being softened in today's media and "made into a joke"
  • "When you are marketing things, you want to be overly inclusive" - the way masculinity is portrayed in today's society is more about marketing than ideology
  • Masculinity is what men percieve to each other as masculine, are the things we need from each other to survive through our evolutionary history - The parameters of masculinity never change, they are part of who we are in throughout time
  • Find out about Jack Lemmon here - the author who's books helped him on his journey
  • What you believe, comes true - it is a self-fufilling prophecy
  • The failing answer in life is waiting for approval for what you are wanting to do
  • Your tribe needs to share the same values as yourself and be more than just about one thing like sports - there has to be a higher purpose involved in the tribe.
  • "The people who control the media are not average people"
  • "Men who don't know what masculinity is are more subject to be manipulated in terms of what tnhey need to be masculine"
  • See the interview I did with Tanner Guzy here
  • It is a good thing to have competition with other men, to take controlled risks and realise you won't break, that you won't die - physical things are very important
  • People will talk down to you when you try to improve yourself as it brings other people's failures into sharper perspective and they don't want you to succeed - getting better should be about you and your own change
  • "You don't need to be a dick to be a masculine man", you can be just as smart, as creative, as talented, as loving etc as you always are and get better and yet become more masculine
  • You can't expect affirmation from those who aren't on the same mission as you - you need to focus out the hate and focus instead on those who get the message you are providing and on the same journey as you
  • If you believe in something, you should measure your actions against and ensure you are meeting your beliefs, that you are being consistent in your beliefs

What we cover

  • Who he is
  • The turning point that started his transformation from 'fat kid' into a fitness idol - How he used his own physical trauma to help others
  • Who he looked up to as role models when he was a child
  • Where modern day fitness is going wrong and the common problems he sees with people trying to improve their physicality
  • The essential principles you need to follow to actually see results
  • The motivations behind the workouts he builds for his followers and why his workouts are so popular - "the brilliance is in the simplicity"
  • How can someone start making fitness part of their life and how to make it a consistent habit - you can't be consistent with something if it is not sustainable
  • What he considers is a 'fit person' - how can we distinguish whether someone is actually fit or not
  • How you should workout during holidays and events - 'don't turn off the light, just dim the switch a little'
  • BJ's awesome book 'Your Body is Your Barbell
  • A great workout ideal that anyone listening can use today to start getting fitter
  • How we can stop comparing ourselves and focus on our own transformations instead - how to focus on the man in the mirror
  • Becoming a presenter vs being a coach
  • How he developed the Men's Health brand to appeal to all regardless of their current fitness level and one of the biggest mistakes you can make in any industry
  • Where his creativity comes from - how does he build his brand, make products etc
  • How does he juggle with so many demands for his time and multi-task a relationship, business, training etc
  • What he would like all men listening to take from this interview
  • An unusual fact about himself that few know
  • How you can keep in touch with him
  • What BJ stands for and how he loses money on his website to make a sex joke!
  • And so much more

Some things to reflect on

  • "Food was something that became a comfort thing" - are you using food to emotionally comfort yourself? What can you change this to?
  • You need to approach fitness like a lifestyle - it doesn't matter what you choose to do activity wise (obviously there are better activities than others) but you need to be consistent and enjoy it
  • People have no appreciation for how long it can take to build muscle - it can take 3-5 years to build muscle
  • You can change everything about yourself on the exterior level to help show them what is on the interior
  • It is important to define the 'why' you want to change to actually change yourself - but this is something that you need to discover on your own
  • The more you spend in one position, the more your body will adapt to this shape and tighten up
  • Daily walking is one of the best habits and can help improve you straight away and give key indicators of your current fitness level
  • To improve your diet, aim for "mostly protein and produce" on your plate, don't worry about cutting things out at first
  • You need to master your bodyweight first before you should try weights
  • For him, workouts should have 'movements that you can do for life' and are low impact but high return
  • Just because someone does a particular or range of movements, doesn't mean that you need to do to succeed and get fit - what is right for you?
  • Successfully fit people, have created a lifestyle that makes it easy for them to become fit - you can always add time but it is hard to take away time
  • Fitness should be accessible to all and fun - "we want to stimulate, not annihilate" - 2 or 3, 30-45min workouts a week is the sweet spot for fitness success
  • "All the stuff that has humbled us along the way become huge assests down the road if you let them ... all the failures we have become amazing teaching tools"

Who: Today's guest is author of The Appearance of Power, Tanner Guzy. Tanner has spent a decade in the world of menswear and even longer writing. He believes the most important question a person can ask is "why" and discovered that this question was rarely addressed in the world of men's clothing - so he set out to find the answer. From working with custom suiting, to studying philosophy, to speaking to audiences of thousands, Tanner has unlocked the keys, principles, and philosophies of why men care about the way they look. Tanner is based out of Salt Lake City, where he lives with his wife and three children. He has traveled the world learning and teaching about masculinity and appearance and is always expanding his understanding of the way the world works.

In this interview, we discuss what our style portrays of us, how we can use fashion to transform our lives and how we can start building our own appearance of power right now.

Some things to reflect on

  • Good style reflects what we expect of ourselves, good style helps us expect more from ourselves and helps improve others opinions of us
  • Masculinity is expressed and communicated by the things that we wear
  • Your style will stop evolving as you stop evolving
  • Work out your goals for your fashion, then build your fashion around what you want it to portray yourself
  • The story that you tell yourself about the style of the man that you see in the mirror every day will shape how you go about life
  • The first step of change is to work out the goals are - what do you want your appearance to say about you-you need honest introspection to succeed
  • Each man's situation is unique and so are you
  • Time, Energy and Money are the three variables you need to consider in your transformation
  • Accessories should help the look, fit into the story you want to tell about yourself
  • You need to consider the tribe and sub tribes that you belong to, which do you give priority to and adapt your style to fit into this
  • We should be evolving, we should not be the same man we were five years ago nor be the same man we are today in five years time
  • Discover the primary identity in our life, let go of the BS we are still holding onto and then work on expressing this to the outside world

Somethings to reflect on

  • We are losing the essential skills that are passed from father to son as we are more and ore being raised by women - this can lead to us learning unsuitable methods for later life
  • "Whatever is focal is causal" - we make it disproportionality important
  • "We evolved sharing stories so if it's not worth sharing stories about then it's not culturally significant"
  • An adventure should bring about growth - you should be a better person at the end of it but take calculated risks!
  • Not everyone will have the same tolerance for risk and adventure but to grow and develop as a person, you need to work outside of your comfort zone, to live an entertaining and fulfilling life
  • You should be chasing small goals to build a strong success feedback loop to help you achieve the next  challenge - start small and build, find that comfort line and step over it
  • "Your brain is wired for novelty" - Look at your missions and the constraints you set on it, challenge yourself to interact differently regardless if you are somewhere new or your local pub
  • Build a community, not a network - make strong connections with one another
  • What community do you care about that you would like to bring together?
