Episode: #37 Tanner Guzy on how to build the Appearance of Power

Who: Today's guest is author of The Appearance of Power, Tanner Guzy. Tanner has spent a decade in the world of menswear and even longer writing. He believes the most important question a person can ask is "why" and discovered that this question was rarely addressed in the world of men's clothing - so he set out to find the answer. From working with custom suiting, to studying philosophy, to speaking to audiences of thousands, Tanner has unlocked the keys, principles, and philosophies of why men care about the way they look. Tanner is based out of Salt Lake City, where he lives with his wife and three children. He has traveled the world learning and teaching about masculinity and appearance and is always expanding his understanding of the way the world works.

In this interview, we discuss what our style portrays of us, how we can use fashion to transform our lives and how we can start building our own appearance of power right now.

Affiliate highlight: Before we get into that, a quick word about our affiliates. I’ve managed to build up some great relationships with some awesome companies. This allows me to obtain special discount codes, deals, and listener exclusive. Please go to www.nextlevelguy.com/affiliates for further info. I am particularly loving ‘Tribe of Mentors’, a fascinating book by Tim Ferriss, the cognitive enhancers ‘Alpha Brain’ from Onnit, and the Natural by the awesome RSD Maxx. Another gem is the super comfy, thin yet warm under t-shirts by Under Armour, which I wear almost daily I love them so much. For these and so much more, check out www.nextlevelguy.com/affiliates.

Some things to reflect on

  • Good style reflects what we expect of ourselves, good style helps us expect more from ourselves and helps improve others opinions of us
  • Masculinity is expressed and communicated by the things that we wear
  • Your style will stop evolving as you stop evolving
  • Work out your goals for your fashion, then build your fashion around what you want it to portray yourself
  • The story that you tell yourself about the style of the man that you see in the mirror every day will shape how you go about life
  • The first step of change is to work out the goals are - what do you want your appearance to say about you-you need honest introspection to succeed
  • Each man's situation is unique and so are you
  • Time, Energy and Money are the three variables you need to consider in your transformation
  • Accessories should help the look, fit into the story you want to tell about yourself
  • You need to consider the tribe and sub tribes that you belong to, which do you give priority to and adapt your style to fit into this
  • We should be evolving, we should not be the same man we were five years ago nor be the same man we are today in five years time
  • Discover the primary identity in our life, let go of the BS we are still holding onto and then work on expressing this to the outside world

Episode: #36 Jon Levy on how to live a life of adventure

Who: Today's guest is the man of adventure Jon Levy. Jon is a behavioral scientist, consultant, writer and keynote speaker best known for his work in the fields of Influence and Social Experience. After years of studying what has become known as “The Science of Adventure”, Jon was able to discern that every adventurous experience follows a predictable four stage processes. Each stage has specific characteristics that, when applied, make the experience exciting. This expertise has garnered Jon a reputation as one of the foremost authorities on Adventure.

In this interview, we talk about what an adventure is, how he manages to get people to buy his drinks all night or stay in their homes and travel the world with him undertaking amazing challenges, to why you need to leave your comfort zone and how to start taking your life by the scruff and living the life of your dreams. If adventure happened by accident then everyone would be having an adventure in their lives but they aren't, follow Jon's advice to build a life of your dreams.

Somethings to reflect on

  • We are losing the essential skills that are passed from father to son as we are more and ore being raised by women - this can lead to us learning unsuitable methods for later life
  • "Whatever is focal is causal" - we make it disproportionality important
  • "We evolved sharing stories so if it's not worth sharing stories about then it's not culturally significant"
  • An adventure should bring about growth - you should be a better person at the end of it but take calculated risks!
  • Not everyone will have the same tolerance for risk and adventure but to grow and develop as a person, you need to work outside of your comfort zone, to live an entertaining and fulfilling life
  • You should be chasing small goals to build a strong success feedback loop to help you achieve the next  challenge - start small and build, find that comfort line and step over it
  • "Your brain is wired for novelty" - Look at your missions and the constraints you set on it, challenge yourself to interact differently regardless if you are somewhere new or your local pub
  • Build a community, not a network - make strong connections with one another
  • What community do you care about that you would like to bring together?
